The arrival of the bow in the West in the 11th century upset European musical practices. The fiddle became the favored instrument for carrying the voice until the 16th century. Although its evolution can be observed on its external appearance, its organological structure, its tuning and its musical function persist during its five centuries of existence.

Based on iconography, ancient texts and a few rare period instruments, Christian Rault and Nicolas Sansarlat present the history of the fiddle and a few other bowed chordophones from the Middle Ages to the dawn of the Renaissance.

Speakers: Christian Rault, luthier, researcher, organologist, and Nicolas Sansarlat, musician.
