From the end of the 12th century and for the first time in
the history of music, a place of musical creation emerges, a primordial place serving as a model for all of Christian Europe: Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. If the liturgies continue to be celebrated there as elsewhere to the sound of the melodies of Gregorian chant, the cantors and canons of the Parisian cathedral develop from the 1170s new styles which are now called the School of Notre-Dame. Dame, introducing major innovations: polyphony and the use of regular rhythmic pulses in music.
The liturgies and the music that make up the daily celebrations now faithfully reflect the Gothic spirit, this medieval conception of the harmony of the world, its coherence and its unity. The particularly daring musical creations which were born at the end of the 12th century in the Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral in full construction, are the echo, the musical counterpart of the Gothic spirit.
